The Antiquary - Issue 5, December 2022 - print copy - 28 pages.
Welcome to December’s issue of The Antiquary, which is suitably seasonal with three articles that provide a bit of Christmas colour. The first article is on a building that comes alive at this time of year, an atmospheric medieval house, that is very much at its best with a fire lit and candles burning. Then an article on two men who rarely lit fires and rarely lit candles, two misers who were the inspiration for Dicken’s character Ebenezer Scrooge - there was not much Christmas cheer in the mansions of the Elwes family. Then lastly an article on the history of Father Christmas, tracing the origins of this popular Christmas character, who brings good cheer to hearth and home, in the song and folklore of the late Middle Ages. I do hope you enjoy this issue and may I express my grateful thanks to you all for supporting the magazine during the first five months of production, may I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a New Year that is full of blessings.
